What Makes Brunello di Montalcino So Special?

To appreciate Fattoria dei Barbi, you first have to know Brunello.

Brunello di Montalcino is widely considered one of the finest red wines on Earth. It comes from the hilltop town of Montalcino, south of Siena. Unlike many famous Italian reds blended with multiple grapes, Brunello must be made from 100% Sangiovese (specifically the local clone, Sangiovese Grosso).

The rules are strict. Brunello spends years aging inside oak casks before it ever sees a bottle. The result is a deep, complex wine with aromas of wild berries, leather, tobacco, and earth. It is built to age gracefully for decades.

Why Fattoria dei Barbi Is a Living Legend

Fattoria dei Barbi is not just another winery. The Colombini family has owned land in Montalcino since 1352, and the estate has been bottling wine since 1892. They were among the very first pioneers to export Brunello across the globe.

Walking into Barbi feels like stepping back centuries. Their historic cellars house hundreds of ancient Slavonian oak casks.

Deep inside, you will find their private wine library. It holds bottles dating as far back as 1870, with vintages from 1957 onward still certified, recorked, and available for collectors.

Beyond wine, the estate preserves authentic Tuscan country culture. They maintain their own artisanal dairy making raw milk pecorino cheese, a traditional restaurant, and the fascinating Community Museum of Montalcino and Brunello.

• Gran Tour di Fattoria (€23 per person): A guided walk through the historic cellars, followed by a tasting of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG plus three select estate wines. (This is the tour we personally tested, and it is fantastic).
  
• Brunello Experience (€33 per person): A dedicated vertical flight for true wine lovers, featuring Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, single-vineyard Vigna del Fiore DOCG, and the rare Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG.
  
• Daily Cellar Guided Tour (€10 per person): Offered daily at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM through the heart of the aging cellars.
  
• The Dairy Tour (€10 per person): Learn traditional Tuscan cheese making. Offered Mondays and Thursdays at 10:40 AM and 4:00 PM (reservation required).
  
• Museum of Montalcino & Brunello (€10 per person): A deep look into the agricultural heritage, tools, and history of the territory. Daily tours at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM (reservation required).
  
• Taverna dei Barbi & Wine Shop: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Enjoy traditional Montalcino soups, charcuterie, artisanal cheeses, and open bottles poured by expert sommeliers.

Getting There

Fattoria dei Barbi is located just outside the hill town of Montalcino, roughly 1.5 hours south of Florence.

Because the estate sits in the scenic Val d'Orcia countryside, we strongly recommend driving or renting a car for the day. The drive takes you through rolling Tuscan hills, cypress alleys, and ancient hilltop villages. It makes for an unforgettable day trip from Florence.
